INTERFOLIA - PUERTO RICO MORTUARY

Project Time: Spring 2022

Advisors: Arch. Maria M. Martínez
& Arch. José Pagán

Location: Isabela, Puerto Rico
Nestled along the serene coast of Isabela, Interfolia PR Mortuary is envisioned as a space that offers solace and dignity during times of grief. The project is named Interfolia to express the idea of being between leaves and layers—a quiet spatial condition where architecture, nature, and memory intersect. Oriented toward the ocean and built with natural, wood-like materials and a green semi-exterior patio, the design places mourning in an in-between state: sheltered yet open, grounded yet continuous with the surrounding landscape, allowing grief to unfold within a living, breathing environment rather than a sealed enclosure.

The ground level features two main public buildings: one dedicated to commercial services—including a dining area, flower shop, and daycare—and the other to mortuary services such as booking offices, a coffin exhibition space, and a chapel. These buildings are connected by a shared semi-open patio, fostering a sense of unity and calm.

Below, a partially sunken level houses the private operational functions of the mortuary, including the morgue, crematory, and basalt area, all discreetly located toward the rear of the site to ensure privacy and respect. In contrast, the chapel, funeral wake areas, dining space, and central patio all open toward the ocean, offering mourners a tranquil and contemplative view of the sea.
